The Breast Cancer Risk Assessment & Counseling Clinic at the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University offers a program that will help determine a woman’s risk for developing breast cancer based on personal and family history. Interested participants will learn about basic cancer genetics, breast and ovarian cancer, and their own individualized risk for developing cancer. Includes a clinical breast exam by a medical oncologist. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact Sheila Lee at 336-716-7980 or shlee@wfubmc.edu.

o Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. The Foundation is a national organization with a network of volunteers working through local affiliates, fighting to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.
The Foundation offers one of the countries most innovative, responsive grant programs in breast health and breast cancer with a focus on research projects with potential for high impact that may not be considered for funding by other agencies. In addition to being a leader in the field for breast cancer research, the Foundation also funds innovative programs in screening and outreach in response to identified needs in over 100 communities nationwide. Currently, the portfolio totals over $17 million with active grants in 3 countries and 25 states at 72 different institutions.
The Charlotte affiliate is one of 106 across the country and is made up of volunteers committed to establish needed breast health services and enhancing existing services within our community. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds from the Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure remain in Charlotte/Mecklenburg and surrounding communities to fund breast cancer projects. The remaining twenty-five percent helps to fund the Komen Foundation’s National Grant Program.
